Shofar and the Arrival of Shabbat

In the times of the Beit HaMikdash, Shabbat was announced publicly. The Gemara (Gemara Shabbat 35b)* describes how the shofar was blown on Friday afternoon: first to call workers in from the fields, then to stop labor in the city, to close shops, and finally to signal the official beginning of Shabbat. These blasts ensured that the entire community entered Shabbat together, prepared and aware — a reminder that Shabbat is not only kept, but welcomed.With Hashem’s help, speedily in our days, may the Beit HaMikdash be built, and may we once again hear the shofar announcing the arrival of Shabbat in Jerusalem.

בימי בית המקדש, השבת הוכרזה בפומבי. בגמרא (שבת ל״ה ע״ב)* מתואר כיצד היו תוקעים בשופר שש תקיעות בערב שבת: תחילה כדי לקרוא לפועלים שבשדות לשוב לביתם, לאחר מכן להפסיק את המלאכה בעיר, לסגור את החנויות, ולבסוף להודיע על כניסתה הרשמית של השבת. תקיעות אלו הבטיחו שכל הציבור ייכנס לשבת יחד — מוכן ומודע — תזכורת לכך שהשבת אינה רק נשמרת, אלא מתקבלתבעזרת ה׳, במהרה בימינו, יבנה בית המקדש, ונשמע שוב את קול השופר המבשר את כניסת השבת בירושלים
